Adani steps up Mundra port investment

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has announced plans to further expand capacity at Mundra port in the Indian state of Gujarat. Mundra is one of the largest commercial ports in India with an annual cargo handling capacity of approximately 225 million tonnes a year. As part of its long plans the company has applied for environment and coastal regulation zone (CRZ) clearances to raise the capacity of Mundra port by another 385 million tonnes a year, over a period of time.

The proposed work includes significant extensions to available quay lengths and the expansion of back-up landside facilities in order to handle a wider range of non-containerised cargo types. The outline proposals also include extending the port’s eastern and western breakwaters by 500m each in the south port and the construction of a 5000m long breakwater on the eastern side of the west port. The work will require dredging approximately 350 million cubic metres of sand and other materials from the sea bed.

According to APSEZ: “Based on the future cargo projections and business requirements of the hinterland, it is proposed to develop the port with the flexibility to handle various cargoes.”
