Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT), a subsidiary of PSA International and India’s largest container terminal, has taken delivery of three additional super-post-panamax quay cranes, increasing the total number of shoreside container handling units at the facility to 12. With this investment, BMCT has now reached its full Phase 1 capacity of 2.4 million teu a year.
BMCT handled more than 520,000 teu in the 2018-19 financial year, a considerable achievement for a start-up terminal that has only just completed its first full year of operations. Planning for BMCT’s Phase 2 development is currently underway. It is expected that construction work will start in the fourth quarter of 2019 and the additional facilities will be operational by the end of 2022. At that stage the annual capacity of BMCT will reach 4.8 million teu and the terminal will occupy a total land area of 200 hectares.
BMCT’s Phase 1 development has a quay length of 1000 m with the deepest berths at JNPT, capable of handling large new generation container vessels. When fully completed, the terminal will have a berth length of 2000 m.
